To evaluate the status of the quality of service (QoS) of the mobile networks along its railway network, DB Regio engaged Focus Infocom to measure the performance of the three German providers. The measurement was conducted on 95% of the railway network, approx. 21.000 km.
The purpose of these measurements was to evaluate the fitness of the network quality to provide internet access to passengers via Wifi. To achieve this, a methodology and algorithms for evaluation were designed which provided the required information in a most efficient and comprehensive way. The results did not only show the distribution of signal strengths on the network, but did also uncover those spots where additional investments would be neccessary to ensure a reliable internet connection.
